Summary

Written by the summariser

Get options for MSS-0451, where journal reports from DMARC p=reject senders are rejected at the Cloudflare edge before the Worker, then record Rob's choice.

Rob asked the agent to pick up MSS-0451, the problem of journal reports from p=reject senders being refused by Cloudflare Email Routing before the Worker runs. The agent ran research on Microsoft's journal report format and Cloudflare's DMARC behaviour, then offered four options. Rob chose to disclose the limitation now and scope a Microsoft Graph mailbox-read connector as a separate task. The agent recorded that decision, created the follow-up task, and corrected the setup guide, operator guide and UI coverage banner, which had wrongly said the wrapper authenticates as the tenant. It pushed the change with one acceptance criterion checked and three left for Rob to decide. When Rob asked whether a loop was ready, the agent said none was prepared and that only MSS-0450 was ready to work on directly.

What came out of it

  • Rob chose 'Disclose now, Graph later' for MSS-0451.
  • Created MSS-0452, a Microsoft 365 mailbox-read route via Graph to replace the edge-rejected journal route. Its first step is a Graph header experiment.
  • MSS-0451 AC4 checked: the setup guide, operator guide and inbound coverage banner now say journal reports are rejected for p=reject senders, so that route only sees non-enforcing senders.
  • Removed the claim that the journal wrapper authenticates as the tenant, which the agent found to be wrong.
  • Two existing tests updated to the new wording; the agent reported they failed on the old text and pass now.
  • Committed and pushed as [commit], per the agent's report.
  • Agent reported format, lint, generated-file check, typecheck, full test suite and build passing.

I picked up MSS-0451 this week. The problem is that journal reports from senders with a DMARC policy of p=reject are refused by Cloudflare Email Routing before my Worker runs, so the route I built never sees them.

I read up on both sides. Microsoft's docs describe journal reports as system messages from a sender you can't change. Cloudflare's docs say Email Routing rejects mail that fails the sender's DMARC policy, and I couldn't find any way to exempt a sender or trust another service's ARC signature. I also couldn't yet prove which address the edge checks. The journal sample I saved keeps only header names, not their values, so it can't settle that on its own.

I chose to disclose the limitation now and treat a Microsoft 365 mailbox-read route through Graph as a separate task. That's now MSS-0452. Its first step is an experiment to see whether the basic read permission returns the authentication headers. If it doesn't, the task comes back to me rather than asking for broader access.

The setup guide, the operator guide and the coverage banner in the UI now say journal reports are rejected for p=reject senders, so that route only sees senders that don't enforce DMARC. I also removed a claim that the wrapper authenticates as the tenant, which was wrong. Two tests needed the new wording, and the format, lint, typecheck, full test suite and build all pass locally. The deploy dry-run needs settings that only CI has, so that's left to CI.

Still open:

  • Confirming which address the edge checks needs one delivered journal report read privately in production. I haven't signed off on that yet.
  • The criterion about reports being delivered after the fix can't close under this decision, and I still need to decide whether to drop it.
  • The API still uses a bias label that now describes only the forwarded-copy route. It's a frozen interface, so renaming it can wait.

Next in the queue is MSS-0450, merging duplicate journal reports and correcting the inflated counts. Nothing else is ready to run in parallel.

Left open

  • MSS-0451 AC1 (identify which address the edge checks) needs one delivered journal report's outer From and Return-Path read privately in production. Rob has not yet approved this.
  • MSS-0451 AC3 (show p=reject reports delivered after the fix) cannot close under this decision. The agent suggested dropping it, pending Rob's answer.
  • The API's coverage.bias value is still 'carried-sealed-chain-survival', which now describes only the forwarded-copy route. It is a frozen interface, so renaming it is left to Rob.
  • The domain contract doc still says coverage selection is not sender policy strictness, which is now incomplete. It was not changed because it is a frozen-interface doc.
  • The deploy dry-run was not run locally because it needs CI-only bindings. The local policy check failed on old package-lock.json versions from fetched branches and gitignored files in codex/, not on the agent's changes.
  • No loop is prepared. MSS-0450 is ready but not started; MSS-0452 is blocked until its Graph experiment runs in a tenant Rob authorises; the 10 parked tasks were not re-read.
